Cookie policy

We use cookies on our websites, platforms or third-party websites where we display these pages. Below you will find more information about cookies and how to manage them. By using our website and/or services, you accept the use of cookies in accordance with this Cookie Policy. If you do not accept the use of cookies, you can disable them by following the instructions in this Cookie Policy, for instance by changing your browser settings so that cookies from this website cannot be stored on your device.

What terms do we use in this Cookie Policy?

  • We use the term ‘user’ to refer to the users of our websites, online pages and services.
  • We use the terms ‘you’, ‘your’ and ‘yours’ to refer to the user reading this Cookie Policy.
  • We use the terms ‘we’, ‘us’, ‘our’ and ‘Vanbreda’ to refer to the Vanbreda group. The controller of your personal data is the Vanbreda group company that collected the data. This controller is referred to in this Cookie Policy as ‘Vanbreda’. More information about the Vanbreda group and contact details can be found in the Vanbreda Privacy Statement.

What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your device when you visit a website. They are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognises that cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device.

Cookies do many different jobs, such as allowing you to navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improving the user experience. They can also help to ensure that adverts you see online are more relevant to you and your interests.

Certain cookies contain personal information – for example, if you click on “remember me” when logging in, a cookie will store your user name. Most cookies will not collect information that identifies you, and will instead collect more general information such as how users arrive at and use the website, or their general location.

There are four main kinds of cookies:

  • Session cookies last only for the session. They are deleted when the user closes the web browser.
  • Persistent cookies remain even after the session is closed. They are stored on a user’s hard drive until they expire (persistent cookies are set with expiry dates) or until the user deletes the cookie. Persistent cookies may be used to collect identifying information about the user, such as browsing behaviour or preferences for a specific website.
  • First-party cookies belong to the site you visit.
  • Third-party cookies are fetched from a site whose content is retrieved indirectly, for example through an image or a banner.

The majority of browsers support them (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, etc.). However, you can set your browser to decline cookies, or you can delete your cookies yourself if you wish.

What cookies do we use?

Generally, our cookies perform up to four different functions:

1. Essential cookies
Some cookies are essential for the operation of our website. For example, they enable us to identify the user and ensure that the user has access to the registration or login pages. These cookies do not collect data about you that can be used for marketing purposes or remember where you have been on the Internet. This category cannot be disabled. (You can set your browser to block and/or delete these cookies, but if you do you may be unable to access all the content offered on the pages in question).

2. Performance and analytics cookies
These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website, for instance which pages visitors go to most often and whether they are shown error messages. These cookies do not collect information that identifies you. The information that these cookies collect is anonymous and is only used to improve the functioning of the website. Such cookies are only placed after you have given your consent.

3. Functionality cookies
We may use functionality cookies to allow us to remember your preferences. For example, cookies save you the trouble of typing in your user name every time you access the site, and remember your customisation preferences, such as which regional edition of the website you want to see when you log in. We may also use functionality cookies to provide you with enhanced services such as allowing you to watch a video online or comment on a blog. If these cookies are not used to provide a service expressly requested by you, they will only be placed after you have given your consent.

4. Share buttons
Our websites may carry embedded share buttons to enable users to easily share articles with their contacts through third-party websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Twitter and LinkedIn may use session cookies and persistent cookies, introduced by the share buttons, to improve their services (including understanding user interaction and monitoring aggregate usage and web traffic routing). You can find more information in the privacy policy of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

How can I manage or delete cookies?

You can enable, disable or delete cookies at browser level. In order to do this, follow the instructions provided by your browser (usually located under ‘Help’, ‘Tools’ or ‘Edit’). Disabling a cookie or category of cookie does not delete the cookie from your browser: you will need to do this yourself from within your browser. Please remember that if you do choose to disable cookies, you may find that certain sections of our website do not work properly. You can change your cookie preferences at any time in the future and withdraw your previous consents.

We process the personal data stored on the cookies (to the extent that the placed cookies collect your personal data) in accordance with the privacy policy set out in our Vanbreda Privacy Statement. You will also find more information there about your rights regarding personal data. We invite you to read this carefully.

If you have any questions or problems regarding cookies and/or the processing of your personal data, you can contact our data protection officer (DPO) at dpo@vanbreda.be or by post at Vanbreda Risk & Benefits NV, attn. DPO, Plantin en Moretuslei 297, 2140 Antwerp.
