Thalia loves finding solutions – in games and at work

Bland and conventional? That’s not for Thalia. As a Client Manager at Vanbreda Health Care, she has an answer to every question. Her colourful personality comes out in her interactions with clients – as do her new custom-made sneakers. Meet Thalia!

How did you end up at Vanbreda?

Thalia: I trained to join the police or the army. If you’d told me back then that I would end up in insurance, I wouldn’t have believed it (laughs), but after working as a security guard for almost a year, I started having trouble with my knee. The irregular hours didn’t suit me either. I applied for a job at Vanbreda and I’m grateful that I was given the chance to prove myself.

What do you like most about your job?

Thalia: There’s so much going on. It might not be the job I originally had in mind, but I soon found that a 9-to-5 job in insurance is anything but boring. I’m presented with new questions or situations every day. Even colleagues who have been working here for thirty years have never come across some of these things. I also regularly get new clients or tasks, which makes the work very varied and challenging.

What is the work atmosphere like?

Thalia: The atmosphere here is very warm and informal. I’m quite introverted by nature, but when I feel at ease I’m very open and approachable. I feel like I can be completely myself with my colleagues. The word ‘Ohana’ is tattooed on my wrist. In Hawaiian culture, that means family, but not just blood relatives. It means that no one gets left behind or forgotten. My colleagues are a bit like family to me: they are my ‘Ohana’.

What do you like doing outside work?

Thalia: I enjoy gaming with my boyfriend. I really like games where you have to think, look for clues and work together to find a solution. That’s what I do in my job too, actually: see connections, think logically and solve problems. I also like games where you go exploring in a fictional world.

Seeing connections, thinking logically and working together to find a solution: that’s what I enjoy doing.

I also spend a lot of time with my dog Koda. My colleagues know him too, because they came to my house to visit him as a puppy. (laughs) At the weekend, we often head out for long walks. Last summer, we went on a trip to the mountains with the dog. It’s fine with me if it’s an adventure. A steep mountain hike with a chasm right beside you is quite exciting, but I love the adrenaline. Enjoying nature and getting plenty of exercise at the same time – I find that blissful.

How would your colleagues describe you?

Thalia: Very enthusiastic, I think. Someone who likes learning and trying new things. Also quite determined and persistent. When I get started on something, I want to do it properly. I can really sink my teeth into a project and double-check things until I’m sure of every detail. I think my colleagues also know where to find me if they have a problem or just want to have a chat. I like to listen and help.

Another nice thing about my job is being able to help people who are going through a difficult time. Someone who was admitted to the hospital and sends an email afterwards to thank me for helping out so quickly – that makes my day!
