Why did you choose the insurance sector?
Margot: I previously worked as a lawyer. During my traineeship at the bar, I completed the postgraduate programme in Liability and Insurance Law, in which I learned more about the technical side of insurance. I found it really interesting. At the same time, I was looking for a better work-life balance.
Insurance: it doesn’t sound very sexy to lots of people. So when I told my friends and family that I was making the switch, there were quite a few surprised reactions. But for me, it’s the perfect combination of technical and social skills. I can really get stuck into the legal side of insurance, but I also attend meetings with clients or insurer events. Networking is very important in my job. The people I meet are always really enthusiastic, open and curious. Definitely not the shy and retiring types my friends apparently had in mind. (laughs)
Which three qualities describe you best?
Margot: Spontaneous, positive and empathetic. You certainly need that last one in this job. You don’t just have to come up with answers and be able to explain complex matters: above all, you have to listen to the client and really understand them. Why does a client want to take out insurance? What is causing them stress or anxiety?
What are your strengths?
Margot: As a lawyer, it was important to be effective with the spoken word. That verbal persuasiveness comes in handy now as well. Additionally, I am quite stress-resistant. Perhaps both of these come from having sung in choirs and performed since I was four years old. For example, at my secondary school graduation, I stood on stage all alone. Singing in a choir has taught me how to deal with stress, but also how to work together. You have to be listening and adapting to each other all the time.
What do you like doing outside work?
Margot: Singing! (laughs) My Friday evenings are reserved for the choir, which has now become a close-knit group of friends. A while ago, we did a concert on the theme of the northern lights, featuring musical pieces from Scandinavia and special lighting. I thought it was beautiful. I’ve also played the viola for a long time, so music is quite important in my life. I can always express my emotions through it. The music I listen to often reflects how I feel at that moment. In addition, I enjoy travelling: from Croatia to Canada or Costa Rica. As long as it’s an active holiday, and not just lying on a beach.
What is your relationship with your colleagues like?
Margot: Really good! Everyone is very sociable and accepts you as you are. I’ve only been working here for a few months, but I was immediately welcomed into the group. For example, all of us always eat lunch together. And soon we will be competing in the Vanbreda quiz. You notice that colleagues find it really important to get to know each other and create a pleasant environment for each other. I’m very happy about that.
